We arrange for her to bring him around to our place. Kai’s owner asked me if she could “swap” Kai for my Labrador pup! I didn’t even think twice and said yes! She went on to say -there’s one more condition -you have to get a lead on him-he’s never had one so good luck. She said she’d make a deal with me – I’d just bought down a lovely Labrador bitch from the north island to show and she hated being shown right from the time she’d arrived. She asked me if I was still keen on him -I replied absolutely!! She told me she couldn’t cope with worrying where he was not where he’d end up and constantly worried she’d find him dead. One night she rang me in tears – Kai had been missing for over a week and they thought they would find him dead from eating possum bait or damaged caught in a trap but no-they eventually found him in the centre of a huge pile of blackberry bushes where he’d run into trying to catch a rabbit. I told Kai’s owner if she ever wanted to sell him please let me know. He used to free range over the hills on their farm. I made lots of excuses to return to visit Kai over the next few months. I learnt all about the breed characteristics and also that Kai had never had a collar or lead in him as his owners said the breed was for hunting birds in the forests of Finland and liked to roam free. Over twenty years ago I used to have a couple of Labradors and two German Shepherds and 3 young children-we used to frequent all the dog shows in the upper South Island I used to deliver products to people in the country and one day this red dog came running up to greet me at this ladies farm gate -I immediately fell in love with him – he was stunningly different and very beautiful I was invited inside and introduced to an almost 2 year old Male entire Finnish Spitz called “Kai”.
